Chances are you know a teen or two who tuned into last night’s MTV Video Music Awards. Maybe you even watched the show yourself. Either way, Miley Cyrus was the talk of the night. And unlike last year, it wasn’t because she twerked with giant teddy bears. Instead, she surprised us all by not heading to the stage to receive her award for Video of the Year. She took the opportunity to shine the spotlight on a very worthy cause: homeless youth.
Jesse, a homeless teen from Los Angeles, spoke in Miley’s place. Here’s an excerpt from his inspiring and courageous speech:
My name is Jesse and I am accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States who are starving, lost and scared for their lives right now. I know this because I am one of these people… Though I may have been invisible to you on the streets, I have a lot of the same dreams that brought many of you here tonight… A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.
Miley watched from the side of the stage, trying not to cry. It was definitely one of the most poignant moments of the night, and bravo to Miley for shedding light on such an important issue. She then posted a video to her Facebook further explaining the cause and her desire to raise awareness. Any fans who donate are entered to win a trip to Brazil to hang out with Miley backstage at her show.
It’s amazing how much difference a year makes, huh? I’d say this is a huge improvement from the conversations she started last year. For more about this topic, check out this “Different Like You” story from Choices magazine‘s Nov./Dec. 2013 issue about Kevin, a homeless teen who shares his story.
