Here at Choices and TeenBeing, we love learning about anything that has to do with teens getting outside and getting active. So, when we heard that Nickelodeon’s 10th Annual Worldwide Day of Play was being held this Saturday and in our hometown of New York City, we were beyond excited.
The Worldwide Day of Play is about coming together and encouraging kids and teens to lead an active, healthy life. And that doesn’t have to mean training for the Olympics, it means doing what kids have known how to do their entire lives—play!
In addition to the main event this Saturday, Nickelodeon will be hosting “City of Play” events located all over New York this week. The celebration kicked off today and events will continue throughout the week, including kayaking at the Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse, dancing in Union Square Park, and a “5-Borough Relay Race.”
The main celebration will be this Saturday in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. Kids and teens are invited to join and participate in everything from football games and tennis drills to dancing and double dutch, led by over 30 national and local partner organizations including the NFL, NBA, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and more. There will also be special performances and appearances by Big Time Rush, Ariana Grande, and cast members from some of Nickelodeon’s hit shows. And to show their commitment to getting kids and teens off the couch and outside, Nick will suspend programming across all of its TV channels for 3 hours during the Day of Play’s main events.
But don’t sweat it if you and your teen can’t make it to New York, the day is about getting up and getting outside—no matter where you are. Here are some tips from Nickelodeon on how to celebrate the day from home! We also have some ideas for how you and your teens can get active this Saturday or any day—Frisbee Golf anyone? And before you get out, power up with some healthy fuel for teens perfect for their day of play.
